![]() ![]() The Holy Father then leaves the room, hands the key to one of his servants, and instructs him to charter a ship to the remotest part of the ocean and drop the key overboard. He takes a key from his pocket and tells the priest that he is going to hide it, and that if can find it, it is a sign from God that his soul has been saved and he may continue to be a priest. The Pope, not wishing to destroy the young man’s hope, makes him a deal. After confronting his mother and learning the truth, the priest travels to Rome to seek the advice of the Pope. Realizing the truth, he stops the service and tells the unfortunate young cleric the grisly facts of his conception. He enters the church and finds a novice priest about to bless the congregation for the first time. Years later the scholar returns to that part of the country and finds the whole town has gone to Mass. It seems likely that Mac an Diabhail ina Shagart is an older heathen tale re-contextualised for a Christian audience. One appears in the adventure story “ Echtra Nerai” (the adventures of Nera) which may have been first written down as far back as the eighth century and which the Irish folklorist Séamus Ó Duilearga described as “one of the oldest Irish folktales which has come down to us”. ![]() The devil in “ Mac an Diabhail ina Shagart” is a different beast entirely. Less of an all-powerful malevolent force and more of a vainglorious braggart, an only semi-competent trickster who can be beaten by wilier human foes. Irish folklore, in stark contrast to its depictions of fairies, ghosts and the otherworld, usually portrays the Christian Devil as a comic figure. The scholar flees the house in terror.Įven apart from the shocking transgressiveness of it, this story is unusual when considering that it exists within an explicitly Christian theology. The corpse returns to the bed and brags to the scholar that the farmer’s wife is now with child, that the child shall grow up to be a priest, and that all souls blessed by that priest shall belong to him. He hears the sounds of lovemaking in the next room and, glancing out the window, sees the farmer working in the field. The scholar and the corpse are given a bed to share and the scholar wakes in the night to find his bedmate gone. Terrified, the scholar complies and the unlikely pair come at last to a small farmhouse where the farmer and his wife are having a blazing row. Unusually chatty for its class of person, the corpse asks the scholar to carry him to his destination. A poor scholar, wandering a country road at night (where else?), encounters a corpse on the road. “ Mac an Diabhail ina Shagart” (“The Devil’s Son as Priest”). When studying Irish Folklore in college sometime during the early Holocene I came across the story that would eventually form the basis of my own novel, Knock, Knock, Open Wide. The townspeople buried him before he could spread the plague, and before he had expired from it. Charlotte Stoker told of a man dying from the disease, lying on the side of the road. When crafting Dracula, Bram Stoker anecdotally drew on his mother’s recounting of the days of terror and madness when Sligo was gripped by cholera in 1832. It’s a happy marriage, horror and Irish folklore. They wander the skies for nine hundred years. The macabre in Irish folklore is rarely accompanied with screaming. It will always be there.Īnyone who has had to walk an Irish country road in the dead of night knows that feeling of certainty. Not, “It was said by some that on the road to Kilrush…” On dark nights cycling without a light so as not to warn police patrols of my approach, I instinctively turned my head at times to ensure that the long clammy hand was not reaching out.” It followed travellers at night stretching out this long hand as it tried to grasp them by the back of the neck. “On the road to Kilrush was a figure with a long hand eight feet long. He hears of fairy forts, death coaches pulled by headless horses, driven on by headless coachmen. In vivid passages he describes the stories he hears as he moves in silent darkness from one tiny village to another, spreading revolution. Ó Máille renders a country abandoned and betrayed by its own cultural elite and where the task of preserving the literary, linguistic and musical heritage of the nation has fallen to the common people. No dry military memoir, Ó Máille did not simply describe how the war was fought, but why it was fought. It is generally considered to be the one bona-fide piece of literature to arise from that conflict. First published in 1936, On Another Man’s Wound was written by Earnán Ó Máille and recounts his time as a guerrilla fighter during the Irish War of Independence in the nineteen twenties. ![]()

The aspect ratio is the width of the image compared to the height. It may sound a little complicated, but it’s actually very simple. Understanding the aspect ratio of your photos will help you to get the right image sizes. And that’s why the 4R photo is the most common and has become accepted as the standard photo size. If you stretch an image to a different aspect ratio, it can look distorted and create a skewed effect. As a result, your shots will look clean and natural. Most cameras also use this ratio, including smartphones and digital cameras. On top of this, it’s become the regular photograph size as it has a 3:2 aspect ratio. It’s large enough to see all the details clearly, but it doesn’t take up too much space. So, it’s a safe printing photo size to choose from.īut it’s also just the right size. It’s easy to display and works with the standard photo paper size. One reason this photo print size is so popular is that it fits into many photo albums and frames. The standard photo size is 4 x 6 inches, often known as the 4R size. The Wrap Up What is the standard picture size?īefore we take a look at the various photo sizes, you might be wondering what the most common photo size is. It applies to anything you want to print or post on social media and will help you get the right size and shape.ĥ. You can also keep these photo sizes in mind if you’re designing graphics and other types of images. That will guarantee that your image looks as good as you want it to! If you’re posting photos to social media, you should know the right frame size, too. It’s not just for printing images that you need to have a handle on file size, though. But it can even be visible on smaller photos, too. This effect is most clear on the largest photo prints as it’s easy to see any areas that aren’t crisp. They could even look pixelated, which is the last thing you want. If you drop the resolution too much, you could get grainy or blurry photos. When printing photos, knowing the correct resolution for your images is essential. ![]() Why You Need to Know the Standard Photo Sizes It’s a quick way to double-check the best size of photographs to use. There’s also a handy photo size chart you can reference at any time. It will walk you through the best photo dimensions for any use. You can export to higher quality if your purpose is creating photo slideshows to view from high-resolution monitors. If you’ve ever wondered what is a normal photo size, this guide is for you. ![]() When sharing photos online, 800 by 600 or 1024 x 768 pixels is a good average size to go with. To export the photo for a high quality 300 ppi print, I start with 2100 x 1500 pixels. Since I wanted the lighthouse to be the main subject I adjusted the frame to the far right. For example, the photo below was taken in an aspect ration of 3:2 from the camera, if I want to output the photo in a 5"x7" print, I will have to adjust the dimensions by using the crop tool. You can use the crop tool in PhotoDirector. Make sure your photos are in the cropped correctly for the print size you want. If you are exporting photos for web or screen display, you will need around 75ppi (pixels per inch), for home printers 140 – 200 ppi, and the best quality prints will require 300 ppi.Īs a rule of thumb, the number of pixels required for exporting a photo is determined by multiplying the horizontal and vertical print sizes in inches by the pixels per inch. When determining how many pixels you need, it all depends on how you will be using the photo and what size it will be printed. 300ppi is generally considered the point of diminishing returns when it comes to ink jet printing of digital photos. The higher the ppi value, the better quality print you will get. Resolution of an image is measured by pixels per inch or ppi. The more pixels in a picture, the bigger the image becomes. First of all, we will have to relate image size (pixels) and resolution (pixels per inch, ppi).Ī digital photo is made up of millions of tiny dots called pixels. ![]() ![]() ![]() Adds faster page loading with DNS prefetching and improved page caching, and Bing search option in the Search Field.
